Workshop on the Interpretation, Verification and Modelling of Information
(satellite event at CCS 2024)
September 2, 2024
In an era where the rapid consumption of information has become integral to our daily lives, the imperative to ensure the accuracy of this information has never been more critical. Societies thrive on informed decisions, which are undermined by the pervasive challenges of misinformation and disinformation. The phenomena of misinformation are not novel, yet the advent of the Internet and social media platforms has exponentially accelerated the spread of information. This acceleration leaves little to no time for the verification of facts, consequently magnifying the issues of echo chambers, online incivility, opinion polarisation, and radicalisation. Such challenges pose significant risks to individual mental health, the quality of democratic discourse, and the cohesion of society at large.
Recognising the urgency of these issues, this workshop aims to serve as a confluence for researchers from diverse backgrounds. This workshop aspires to elevate the discourse around misinformation to the forefront of academic and practical research. By fostering an interdisciplinary dialogue, we aim to attract the participation of people from academia, industry, government, and beyond, to discuss not only how address the symptoms of misinformation but also tackle its root causes, thereby safeguarding the well-being of societies and the integrity of democratic institutions.
Join us as we build fruitful discussions in this inaugural event to develop innovative solutions to combat misinformation effectively.
This event is being organised in collaboration with the Alan Turing Institute's Interest Group on the Interpretation, Modelling and Verification of Information.
